While many insurance plans offer one free dental checkup per year, you may benefit from having more frequent checkups. Especially if you have a history of lots of cavities, or large cavities showing up “out of the blue”, it may be a good idea to visit your dentist more frequently.
Catching a cavity when it is small means a small filling, with most of the tooth untouched by the drill. As the cavities grow in size, more and more of the tooth has to be drilled out to remove the damaged portion. Bigger cavity will also be more expensive to repair, and if left untreated, may result in a crown, or even a root canal. More frequent dental checkups are the first line of defense, and even if you have to pay out of pocket for the checkup, you save money in the long run, and have healthier teeth as a bonus.
